Our Farm Wedding: One Month Anniversary

Happy Anniversary to usWe’re celebrating our one-month anniversary so I thought I’d share a few snippets from our big day as we celebrate a friends’ big day this weekend in Boston.

wedding guestsOurs was a low-key, casual wedding. So casual that my sister was pretty sure it was going to be a complete failure. Luckily, she was wrong- it was ridiculously awesome.

Our groom’s dinner involved a pitchfork and witch’s cauldron. My bouquet was flowers picked from the prairie that morning. The guests sat on hay bales. The ceremony was held on the site where my great-grandparent’s home used to sit- in tribute to those that have come before us- with the barn that my great-grandpa built as a backdrop. The pastor read one of Pablo Neruda‘s love sonnets. We planted a birch tree to symbolize our relationship as it continues to grow.

We didn’t have a cake or any kind of professional dessert. We asked our guests to bring their favorite dessert instead of gifts and celebrated our day with a dessert potluck.

I have never tasted better cakes, pies and treats in my life (some of whose recipes I hope to share at a later date)! I enjoyed the variety and creativity that people brought and it was a great conversation started for those that didn’t know anyone else!

The afternoon celebrations consisted of lawn games and by lounging around the lawn on blankets, or walking through our gardens. It couldn’t have been more perfect. Thank you to everyone who participated and celebrated with us!

      Hi Erica-
I love it! Great question. Some people thought I was strange when I first mentioned the idea, but everyone was incredibly impressed with it once they got there. The variety is just so much better that way.
In terms of asking- Basically I told them in lieu of gifts I would like them to make us their favorite dessert to share for the wedding. We still got quite a few gifts, if that’s a concern for you. One thing that I didn’t do and kind of wish that I had is ask everything to share the recipe for the dessert they bring as well. Just idea so you can improve on mine… I hope that helps- Good luck!
