Thanksgiving Whole Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Whole Cranberry Sauce RecipeGrowing up I looked forward to Thanksgiving all year long. I looked forward to watching my grandma wrestle the jellied cranberry sauce out of the can. I was intrigued by it’s texture and how it held its shape. I mean, how awesome is it that jellied cranberry sauce looks like a can?! I’m not going to lie, I still really like the taste and texture of the can-shaped cranberry sauce- I just don’t eat it for Thanksgiving.

I have graduated to the luxuries of homemade cranberry sauce- where I have control over the amount of sugar and flavors. But especially because I can make plenty of extras so that I know I’ll have leftovers for some truly delicious day-after-Thanksgiving eating!

Ingredients for the perfect cranberry sauce

Like the cranberry recipe on the back of the Ocean Spray Cranberry packaging, the ingredients and recipe for the sauce is simple and it cooks quickly. The ingredients to a cranberry sauce are easy. Sugar, water, cranberries and lemon zest.

Soak Cranberries

Start with the cranberries by soaking them in water. This gives you a chance to make sure there are no bad berries in your bunch, as well as cleaning off the berries.

Lemon Zest into the Sugar Water

Add the sugar, water and lemon zest to a sauce pan and bring to a boil. The recipe calls for a 1:1 ratio of sugar and water. It’s great that way, as cranberries tend to be somewhat tart, but if you prefer to cut out some of the sweetness you can lower the sugar content to a 1/4 cup less.

Just be prepared for a little less jelly and a little more tartness

Simmer Cranberries

Once the water, sugar and lemon zest are boiling you can add the cranberries. Simmer the entire mixture for at least 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Then remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature, if serving immediately. Or cool in the fridge while you get everything else ready for Thanksgiving day.
