Following the coast of the Bay of Fundy through New Brunswick and up into Prince Edward Island is a road trip that everyone should take in their lifetime. Especially during the fall, when the colors are bright and the tourists minimal.
Pictured above is Confederation Bridge– the 8 mile long bridge that became the easy connection between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island in 1997, where before there were only ferries.
Every good international road trip starts with a border crossing. We crossed from Calais, Maine into St. Stephen, NB, Canada.
Lobster and fresh seafood fishing is a way of life along the Bay of Fundy, with little fishing villages spread along the entire coast. Every place we stopped had their own collection of vivid buoys and a unique way of displaying them.
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island was celebrated the 150th anniversary of delegates meeting together at Province House (pictured) to make the decision to start making steps towards becoming an independent nation.
The red sands and cliffs around French River, PEI– along the north central coast were completely deserted. Cold winds and dark clouds kept away everyone but us as we explored the crevices to the soft stone that the waves have carved out over time.
A calming cairn was a treat to find along the rocky shores. A greeting from a past visitor.
Lighthouses abound on Prince Edward Island. Pictured is Point Prim Lighthouse, located on the south eastern coast, along the Northumberland Strait. Of 63 total lighthouses that sit on PEI, it was the first one on the island.
Exploring the lighthouse on our own was an incredible treat. To stand at the top and look out at how the sea and clouds blended together it’s easy to understand the need for so many lighthouses on the island.
Staying at bed and breakfasts along the way gets you a feel for the culture, a chance to speak with locals and some amazingly delicious breakfast treats!
Such beautiful photos! I lived in Toronto with my Canadian husband for over two years, and we never made it out to New Brunswick or PEI. At least that leaves us something to do for next time we’re around in Canada. :)
Thanks Jess! It was very beautiful so I highly recommend the visit. Like anywhere, I could go back again and again and never see it all!
