One of my favorite things about road trips is that it gives me more freedom to pack what I need or want on a trip. I enjoy bringing snacks from home; especially if they’re made straight from my garden, like my fruit leathers or homemade applesauce. They both travel very nicely and make for a delicious taste of home when on the road! Plus they make me feel closer to home and they’re healthy, which is always an added bonus!
The best part about them both is that they’re simple to make- prepare the fruit and then leave them alone while they cook! Here’s the fastest way to make homemade applesauce in time for your next trip, or pack it for tomorrow’s school lunch.
Homemade Crockpot Applesauce
Peel, slice, and remove the seeds of 6 apples. In a crockpot place the sliced apples and cover the bottom with water. You basically want to water to help moisten the apples so that they don’t dehydrate in the heat before they’re able to create any of their own juice. Throw in a cinnamon stick or two (or 3- this is your applesauce!).
I like my applesauce a bit tart so generally add either no sugar or a small amount of honey. If you like it sweeter then add accordingly. Don’t add too much in the beginning though- you can always add more later if it’s too tart.
Cook the apples in the crockpot on high for about 2.5 hours, or until they’ve sort of melted together into a scrumptious sauce. (and made your house smell like heaven).
I always cook my applesauce towards the end of the day because I like to serve it as a special treat for dessert. Serve it piping hot over a large scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. The sweet ice cream mixes well with the slight tartness of the apples, plus there’s nothing better than just a little bit of cool, melted ice cream combined with a hot flavorful sauce.
Try it- You will not regret it!
