Minneapolis, the “Mini Apple,” has plenty to offer all, but little would you know that down a residential side street, off of Lake Street in the heart of Minneapolis rests a church designed by Eliel Saarinen and Eero Saarinen.
I love everything mid-century modern, the colors, the lines and the beauty in its simplicity. Christ Church Lutheran is all of these things and more. I have heard it described as a ‘humble’ place, especially considering who designed it, and I would definitely second that sentiment.
The Saarinens manipulated the light in such a way that it draws you in; towards the pulpit as you sit in the pews, or towards the sanctuary as you leave and gather with friends. The architecture was created in such a way that it also creates great acoustics. Obviously it’s hard to experience either of these draws through a photo, but I tried to bring some of the semblance of beauty to you through them.
I also love that Christ Church Lutheran preservationists have left the furnishings the same over all these years. I don’t think the space would be the same with modern furniture- the colors, the designs and the layout were all specially chosen to outfit this gorgeous place of worship. I highly recommend a visit!
Christ Church Lutheran is located at 3244 34th Ave. South in Minneapolis.
They are open to worshippers every Sunday, but if you go, please be respectful and attend as a worshipper, not a tourist. The 2nd Sunday of every month at 11 AM they do an architectural tour, which may be the route to take for the tourist in you.
I was fortunate enough to visit while on the Mid Century Modern Tour through the Minnesota Historical Society. They have tons of wonderful tours and events- look them up and attend one (or all), you won’t regret it!
