1. Visit the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and final resting place.
Harry S. Truman was considered the “people’s president” and as you walk through the library and museum it’s not hard to understand why. If you have never studied much about Harry S. Truman than this is a necessary stop on any road trip through or around Kansas City.
An eternal flame burns over the courtyard where President and First Lady Truman are buried. The Presidential Library surrounds the courtyard.
2. Walk the streets that Harry S. Truman spent most of his life walking.
Harry S. Truman arose early and walked every morning when he was at home in Independence, MO. There is a guide of his walking tour and important stops along the way throughout the heart of Independence. Try to plan your trip for early spring to really soak up all the beauty of downtown Independence during your walking tour. The Redbud and Cherry blossoms are extraordinary!
3. Harry S. Truman Home
The walking tour will take you past Harry S. Truman’s home at 219 N. Delaware- which is a National Historic Site (top photo). You can get a tour, but make sure you purchase your ticket at the visitor center (223 N. Main) before heading that direction!
Note that tours aren’t given on Mondays during the winter months.
4. Grab a malt at Clinton’s Soda Fountain.
Harry S. Truman’s first job was in the same location; at Crown Drug Store. Now a soda fountain with a neat twist of history and great malts! Grab a pineapple one and stroll around Independence Square.

5. Tour the churches.
History, beauty and religion combine in the heart of downtown Independence. There are so many different religions and churches to explore in Independence. Even if you’re not religious some of these buildings are absolutely stunning and worth the visit – ranging from big, old, beautiful brick churches to newer, artistically designed churches.
