5 Spring Pet Tips: Tidy Inside when it’s Muddy Outside

The weather is warming up. Snow is disappearing. Mud and dirt are abounding. That means dirt is abounding on your pets. Which means your inside dog is tracking it into your house after his/her walks. On one level or another it’s probably getting into your home, so here are a few pointers to prevent the mess.

5 Tips to help your pet keep dirt out of your home

1. Wipe paws. First thing’s first- as soon as you walk in the door from your walk have your pet step on a towel and wait while you wipe down their paws. Create a ritual of doing this- complete with a treat.

2. Grooming. Now that the weather has improved my coat has been trimmed accordingly. A shorter ‘do is a good way to make sure that I (and your dog) don’t drag in any excess dirt and debris on that long hair.

3. Time of day. Let your dog out as early as possible in the morning- when the ground is still frozen from the cool night. Or later in the evening, after the mud has started to solidify again. During the day keep your dog close on a leash.

4. Keep out of mud. This one goes without saying, but if you can avoid puddles and mud the better off you are. As a dog who truly enjoys a good romp in a messy puddle I understand how hard this can be, and there is joy in watching your dog enjoy him or herself in that gunk, but allow it to happen purposefully then, and be ready for the next tip.

5. Plan for clean up. Dirt, mud and puddles can be loads of fun, for both  you and your pet. Embrace the mess. Just make sure you plan for serious clean up time. A bath, soap, dry time, and don’t forget to tack on some cuddle time, just cause.
