The firemen find their respective spots around the prairie, starting first in the southernmost corner- the direction into which the wind is blowing. Once everyone is situated the chief gives them the ‘go ahead’ over the walky-talky and smoke begins to drift upwards as the firefighters walk and burn a line with their canisters of oil and flame. After a few minutes their partner follows behind, stomping out the flames. The barrier has now been created that will contain the prairie fire to its designated area.
